Summary

'Let him feel that he is one of us; once fill his mind with the idea that he has been a thief, and he's ours, - ours for his life!'

The story of the orphan Oliver, who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves, shocked readers when it was first published。 Dickens's tale of childhood innocence beset by evil depicts the dark criminal underworld of a London peopled by vivid and memorable characters — the arch-villain Fagin, the artful Dodger, the menacing Bill Sikes and the prostitute Nancy。 Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, in Oliver Twist Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery。

This is the first critical edition to use the serial text of 1837-9, presenting Oliver Twist as it appeared to its earliest readers。 It includes Dickens's 1841 introduction and 1850 preface, the original illustrations and a glossary of contemporary slang。

I think I wouldn't have enjoyed it so much if I hadn't listened to the audiobook。 The narrator did such an incredible performance and voiced each character so well。 I think I wouldn't have enjoyed it so much if I hadn't listened to the audiobook。 The narrator did such an incredible performance and voiced each character so well。 。。。more

Need to re-read to give an updated opinion。 Some paragraphs and descriptions were excruciatingly long for me at the time, but the characters are iconic nonetheless。

En el Instituto es una de las lecturas obligatorias que tenemos, yo siempre suelo amar las lecturas obligatorias, y debo decir que Oliver Twist me sorprendió llegando a llorar teniendo unos 11 años por la situación del muchacho

I’ve read a lot of Dickens, and I can easily say that this is one of my favorites。 It read so differently than some of his later novels, which are big and expansive and weighty。 I love those books, too。 But this book has a lightness to it that isn’t found in some of his later books。 This was his second novel, so I do wonder if, as he aged, he lost some of his belief in humankind’s ability to be full of mercy and kindness and forgiveness。 This book, despite its truly awful murder scene and abusiv I’ve read a lot of Dickens, and I can easily say that this is one of my favorites。 It read so differently than some of his later novels, which are big and expansive and weighty。 I love those books, too。 But this book has a lightness to it that isn’t found in some of his later books。 This was his second novel, so I do wonder if, as he aged, he lost some of his belief in humankind’s ability to be full of mercy and kindness and forgiveness。 This book, despite its truly awful murder scene and abusive treatment of children, manages to make me believe that we might be able to make the world a better place by embracing the love and charity that Dickens so clearly believed could make a difference in society。 。。。more

Oliver Twist is an absolutely delightful read。 Brilliant written, bitingly funny, and full to the brim with immediately unforgettable characters, the novel seamlessly blends a coming-of-age story with a mystery and a satirical critique of Victorian society。 It's rare that a "classic" lives up to the hype, but Oliver Twist undeniably does。 Of the four Dickens books that I've read, Oliver Twist seems to be the best starting point, and I highly recommend it for anybody thinking about delving into D Oliver Twist is an absolutely delightful read。 Brilliant written, bitingly funny, and full to the brim with immediately unforgettable characters, the novel seamlessly blends a coming-of-age story with a mystery and a satirical critique of Victorian society。 It's rare that a "classic" lives up to the hype, but Oliver Twist undeniably does。 Of the four Dickens books that I've read, Oliver Twist seems to be the best starting point, and I highly recommend it for anybody thinking about delving into Dickens's work。 This is a must-read for all。 。。。more

Perhaps not as engrossing as David Copperfield, but a good classic read。

i just wish Oliver would’ve shut the fuck up and eaten his soup so i didn’t have to read this book。

Oliver Twist is an undeniable classic of literature。 I read it when I was little and maybe that's why it felt so long。 However, I remember quite enjoying its story and protagonist。 It's not a fast read in my opinion, though。 Oliver Twist is an undeniable classic of literature。 I read it when I was little and maybe that's why it felt so long。 However, I remember quite enjoying its story and protagonist。 It's not a fast read in my opinion, though。 。。。more

5 Stars!Charles Dickens crafted a true masterpiece with Oliver Twist。 It was dark, emotional, traumatic, horrible, suspenseful, beautiful, hopeful, and wonderful。 I almost want to go get my physical copy and start it all over again。 I absolutely loved it and that's all I can really say about it。 5 Stars!Charles Dickens crafted a true masterpiece with Oliver Twist。 It was dark, emotional, traumatic, horrible, suspenseful, beautiful, hopeful, and wonderful。 I almost want to go get my physical copy and start it all over again。 I absolutely loved it and that's all I can really say about it。 。。。more

I thought the first quarter of the book was very quintessential Dickens。 Dark, bleak, filthy, greasy, etc。 And Oliver, the personification of goodness and purity, contrasted against those abysmal surroundings。 No one gave him a chance。 He was a complete burden to all。 Until he finally meets a family that gave him a chance。But then the majority of the book focuses more on the gang of thieves and their antics。 The bickering, the dealings, the schemes, etc。 It became less of Oliver and was just the I thought the first quarter of the book was very quintessential Dickens。 Dark, bleak, filthy, greasy, etc。 And Oliver, the personification of goodness and purity, contrasted against those abysmal surroundings。 No one gave him a chance。 He was a complete burden to all。 Until he finally meets a family that gave him a chance。But then the majority of the book focuses more on the gang of thieves and their antics。 The bickering, the dealings, the schemes, etc。 It became less of Oliver and was just the plotting of these maniacs。 I found it so boring from mid to end of the novel。 It didn't even come together nicely at the end, with Oliver a mere after thought。Found myself skimming through the majority of the end。 Felt it was tedious and just boring。 。。。more

it was a great book that exposed the hardships of work life for children and how those less fortunate struggled to make a living。 The characters were all brought to life through dialogue and many either had you sympathize with or have a loathing for them。

The book that got me into reading at 13 obviously has to be here。 Back then I didn't even destroy its pages by underlining with a pen; instead I got a bright yellow highlighter from school and marked the lines I thought were beautifully made and the ones that I believed could make me cry。 I do think I cried several times while reading it, but it was definitely worth the tears since I spent the rest of my teenage years visiting the local library searching for more books by Dickens and later other The book that got me into reading at 13 obviously has to be here。 Back then I didn't even destroy its pages by underlining with a pen; instead I got a bright yellow highlighter from school and marked the lines I thought were beautifully made and the ones that I believed could make me cry。 I do think I cried several times while reading it, but it was definitely worth the tears since I spent the rest of my teenage years visiting the local library searching for more books by Dickens and later other authors - less than I would have liked though 。。。more

*update: After discussing at book club, I’m going with 4 stars for this one。 Not quite sure how to rate this one yet。 Read in two parts for a mini book club (our third book so far - Anna Karenina and Wives and Daughters being the other books we’ve read so far)。 I didn’t like the beginning of this book at all。 It was depressing and was really not offering anything worth reading, in my opinion。 The second half was much better - less depressing, more humor, fun plot twists, lots of drama, and yes, *update: After discussing at book club, I’m going with 4 stars for this one。 Not quite sure how to rate this one yet。 Read in two parts for a mini book club (our third book so far - Anna Karenina and Wives and Daughters being the other books we’ve read so far)。 I didn’t like the beginning of this book at all。 It was depressing and was really not offering anything worth reading, in my opinion。 The second half was much better - less depressing, more humor, fun plot twists, lots of drama, and yes, still some sadness。 Looking forward to the book club discussion and hopefully will be able to come up with a star rating after that。 。。。more
